Nia Long & Larenz Tate Talk ‘LOVE JONES’ 15 Years Later…

Mar 14, 2012 | By:

I posted yesterday an interview with the director behind this classic film. Now we get to hear from the stars of the film, today…its 15th year anniversary.

Essence.com caught up with Nia Long & Larenz Tate to get their thoughts on ‘LOVE JONES.’…15 years later!

Check out what they had to say:

First impressions of the Love Jones script:

NIA LONG: I was like, “I love this, and I want to do it.” There was no question. There was also the excitement of, “Oh my gosh, my first leading role.” And I think it shaped the rest of my career.

LARENZ TATE: My initial thoughts were: “I’m digging this character.” And, being from Chicago, I found things in the movie that reflected what I knew. I also liked the idea of [Darius] being smart, and intelligent. The guy’s a writer. He’s creative. He’s artistic. I hadn’t done that. The script spoke to me. Wait, there’s more…

‘LOVE JONES’ Was Written w/Jada Pinkett-Smith In Mind, Not Nia Long, & Will There Be A Sequel?…

Mar 13, 2012 | By:

The Root [TR] did an exclusive interview with ‘LOVE JONES‘ director Theodore Witcher, who since that classic movie, which will always be 1 of my all time favs, has never done another film.

He discusses the making of  ‘Love Jones’ and why he’s never done another movie…check out some excerpts below…

TR: How did you cast Nia Long and Larenz Tate?

TW: I’d originally written the film with Jada Pinkett in mind, and she liked it but passed. I met Nia Long through executive Helena Echegoyen, who recommended her. The studio was keen on Larenz because he’d done Menace II Society, but he didn’t want to work with a first-time director, which I was, and I thought he was O-Dog [his character in Menace], which was not what I wrote.

He liked the script, and once I realized he wasn’t O-Dog, the only question was, could he act enough to be Darius Lovehall? Then I screen-tested he and Nia together and showed the tape to my female friends, and they all said the couple had a spark.

The Root: Why did you make Love Jones as such an atypical love story? Wait, there’s more…

Nia Long Talks New Movie, “MOOZ-LUM”, Which Is In Theaters, Today…

Feb 11, 2011 | By:

Nia Long caught up with Black Voices , to talk about her new film, “MOOZ-LUM”…in theaters TODAY.

Read excerpts below>>>

What’s your role in ‘Mooz-lum?’

Nia Long: I play Safiyah, the mother of Tariq. She’s a Muslim African American woman, obviously. She’s a very contemporary, soulful, passionate woman who I think her main focus is on her children.

It’s been a while since you did a feature film. The last film you appeared in was the Chris Rock documentary ‘Good Hair.’ Why did you take on this independent film?

NL: Honestly, when I pick my roles, I pick them based on the content and what moves me and what I feel like is a project that’s going to be meaningful. When you don’t see me in something it’s usually because either I wasn’t right for it or it just wasn’t of interest to me. And to be quite frank, there hasn’t really been a lot going on. It’s a very difficult time.

The subject matter here is powerful. Did you do any research into the Muslim community and were there challenges you faced?

NL: I absolutely did. I spent a lot of time with the director’s mother who really talked to me about their life and then also about the faith and sort of what she went through as his mom. Wait, there’s more…

Nia Long’s New Movie… “MOOZ-LUM”

Jan 15, 2011 | By:

“MOOZ-LUM”

In Theaters

February 11, 2011

I was amongst the invited media to attend the  exclusive screening of this film, which was held last night here in Atlanta. Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but I’m hearing such powerful reviews and the trailer gives us a glimpse of this powerful story and the amazing actors who portray it so well.

Nia Long has been laying kinda low, so I’m happy to see her in something new. But the real focus of this project is actor Evan Ross, who as you know is Diana Ross’ son. He’s garnering such a respect as an actor based on the quality of work (which includes: ATL, PRIDE, 90210), and the intensity he brings to his work, and he’s definitely someone we can expect great things from in the film world. I definitely see an Academy Award in his future.

Let’s support quality films, but even more importantly, quality black films. Check out the trailer below, and click the link to DEMAND IT IN YOUR CITY!!! Wait, there’s more…
