It looks like Lil Wayne may get one more day of freedom before beginning his yearlong prison sentence for gun charges. This morning (March 2), hundreds of people were evacuated from the New York courthouse where Wayne (born Dwayne Michael Carter) was to begin his sentence, due to a smoky basement fire.
According to The Associated Press, courts spokesman David Bookstaver said the fire was apparently started in a wooden contractor’s shed, causing the evacuation around 10:30 a.m. after the building filled with smoke. NY1 reported that the courthouse would be closed for the rest of the day as a result of the fire, which caused injuries to five firefighters, two civilians and one prisoner. It took crews over an hour to bring the blaze under control.
The Cash Money MC arrived shortly after 2 p.m. with his label heads Birdman and Slim. He quietly entered the courtroom as photographers snapped pictures from the hallway. His lawyer Stacey Richman spoke…
She informed the judge that she sent a notification to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that the rapper is suffering from a cracked tooth and would need to postpone his sentence. The judge agreed and ruled to reschedule for March 2.
The rapper is set to undergo surgery February 12 in Miami, according to Richman. He will need a week to 10 days to recover. His defense offered prosecutors February 25 as a date for Wayne to turn himself him in after surgery, but Judge Charles H. Solomon instead selected March 2.
The judge then warned Wayne that he must return to Miami on Tuesday. Solomon insisted if he leaves tomorrow, there would be a chance his surgery would be delayed due to hazardous weather conditions leaving New York, where a snowstorm is expected.
“I don’t want this to get pushed back anymore,” Solomon said. “This is the last adjournment.”
Lil Wayne is due in a New York court today to be sentenced in a gun possession case back from July 2007, and will be turning himself in and headed off to Rikers Island to start his bid. As the Associated Press notes: “His plea deal calls for a year in jail, though good behavior could shave that to as little as eight months.”
Of going to jail, he tells Rolling Stone that:
“nobody I can talk to can tell me what that’s like. … I just say I’m looking forward to it.”
Wayne’s daughter’s mother, Toya Quotes:
“Sad day for me and my fam:(…This is really a hard pill to swallow. #prayforwayne”
